DERRY CITY AND STRABANE DISTRICT COUNCIL APPROVE ABERCORN ROAD SHIRT FACTORY CONVERSION TO APARTMENTS.

DERRY CITY AND STRABANE DISTRICT COUNCIL APPROVE ABERCORN ROAD SHIRT FACTORY CONVERSION TO APARTMENTS.

MKA Planning have recently obtained permission to convert  the existing factory building into 52 apartments and to provide a new apartment block to the rear providing 27 no apartments and car parking.

The proposal also involved the conversion of 7 no terrace dwellings currently vacant along Wapping Lane into 14 apartments.

The Robert. Sinclair and Co. former shirt factory is a key landmark building in the city – a B1 Listed Building, at a key entry into the City Centre and also to the Historic City Conservation Area.

As the building has been vacant for many years it is on the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society (UAHS) ‘Buildings Heritage at Risk Register’. It is of the upmost importance for the City’s built heritage that these buildings are looked after and preserved.

The approved conversion of the factory building will secure its upkeep and survival and the character and architectural/historic interest of the building will be preserved.

The entire site is located within the Central Area and the factory itself is within the Commercial Core, the historic Conservation Area as well as the Designated Flat Zone as defined in the DAP 2011. The rear of the former factory and the housing along Wapping Lane are zoned for residential purposes. Therefore the proposed development of housing is an acceptable one for this site.
